Your Choice of Wood Flooring Helps Determine Your Home’s Personality

A lot of elements go into your interior decoration, but it all starts at floor level.  Your choice of wood flooring, along with the color or finish of that wood, will do a lot to determine the overall vibe of a room.  You want to pick a wood which will mesh with your overall plan for the decoration.  Establish the mood of each room in preparation for the elements which will be placed on top.

Here are some ideas of wood/color combinations which fit great with popular styles!

How Different Wood Floors Define the Mood of a Room

  1. Light woods: ash and birch

Ash and birch are great flooring materials, attractive and classic.  They’re particularly nice with a light stain, or even making them white.  This creates a very neutral start to a room.   The other fixtures would need to be similarly white or otherwise light-colored to match, although the occasional splash of color will instantly stand out.

  1. Natural woodgrain and warm colors

Do you want to preserve the natural look of your hardwood floor?  Oak or hickory would be perfect.  Give them a light coat of earth tone stain, either brown or red.  This creates a very natural-looking feel which is perfect for a rustic design, or perhaps a more “boho” look.  Use wider planks to highlight the grain!

  1. Grey and black stain

If modernism is your look, your flooring needs to be stained dark grey or black.  Charcoal is particularly striking.  Choice of wood matters less here since it will be nearly invisible under the staining.  Try pine, or lyptus if you want something harder.  A black floor dictates that most of the fixtures above should be black, white, or metallic.  Use other colors sparingly.

  1. Mahogany: the classic choice

Nothing says class and sophistication quite like a mahogany floor, which is the perfect setting for gold-trimmed pieces and plenty of glasswork.  If true mahogany is out of your price range, lyptus looks very similar.  Mahogany also works quite well with naturalistic stonework – but not bricks.
