The Pros and Cons of an Exterior Painting Project

Taking up an exterior painting project can be a fun pastime for you, especially if you have a bit of time on your hands. Depending upon the size of the project, you can either complete it by yourself, or you can assemble a group of friends to help you. If you don’t have any experience with painting in the past, the project is obviously going to be a bit difficult, especially for the first few days. However, painting isn’t very difficult, and once you get the hang of it, it won’t require a lot of effort to cover large surfaces in a short span of time.

However, you still have to be careful. If you are going to be painting the exterior of your whole house, or any smaller building such as a shed, you will need the right tools. Moreover, if you make a mistake when painting the surface, you will need to first remove the paint and then apply another coat. Therefore, before starting any exterior painting project, you have to consider the pros and cons to taking on such a project. Here are some major pros and cons of taking up an exterior painting project.

Pros:

  • It’s a Good Learning Experience – Have you wanted to be an expert in home improvement work but never had the chance before? Taking up an exterior painting project is just the right way to go. Taking up the project can be a great deal of fun, and you also get to learn a lot. You will learn about the type of paints that can be used outdoors, the application process, as well as how to use different types of brushes.
  • It Saves Money – Rather than hiring a professional painter to paint the surface for you, you can do it yourself. Apart from being an excellent learning experience, you will also end up saving a good deal of money on your exterior painting project.
  • You Don’t Have to Rely on Others – Doing all the home improvement work by yourself will make you independent, so you don’t have to rely on anyone else to help you. What if the professional painter says that they are not free for the next week or so? You’ll end up waiting on them to show up, and thus wasting time.

Cons:

  • Mistakes, Mistakes, Mistakes – If this is the first time you have worked on any exterior painting project, you are bound to make a lot of mistakes, especially if you don’t have anyone to guide you. You might end up buying the wrong supplies or applying the paint in the wrong way.
  • Costs Could Spiral Upward – If you don’t know what you need to buy, you will probably buy whatever the salesman recommends. Needless to say, there’s a chance you will end up buying more than what you need, thus raising your overall costs higher than your initial budget. Or, if you end up painting in the wrong way, you will need to scrap the project and restart from scratch.
