How Often Should A Home’s Interior Be Repainted?

A house will inevitably see several paint jobs in its life but how often should a home’s interior be repainted? Sometimes it is due to damage to the walls, such as staining; sometimes it’s simply because the owner wants some new colors. Either way, interior house painting is a regular task for most homeowners.

But what is the proper frequency of wall painting?  Are there recommendations for how often different rooms need to be repainted?

Well, it’s largely a matter of personal taste, but there are some guidelines we follow when discussing home restoration jobs with our clients. Here is the advice we usually give, when they’re asking about interior house painting.

How often should a home’s interior be repainted?

Living and Dining Rooms

Despite being fairly well-used rooms in the house, the walls in your living and dining rooms usually don’t see too much use and abuse. So, assuming the paint used was high-quality to begin with, they can last for years without showing many signs of age. Chances are you’ll repaint your living and dining areas for aesthetic reasons long before they need restoration.

However, if it’s been more than 6-7 years since the last repaint, they will probably be showing some wear, tear, and fading that a new paint coat will fix.

Kitchens and Bathrooms

Kitchen walls have it rough. They’ll be seeing a lot of food splatters, varying high heat and humidity, and more. A typical kitchen painter will try to use paints which are as resistant to staining or heat damage as possible, but there’s only so much that can be done. So, we generally recommend repainting a kitchen every three years or so, especially if a lot of cooking is done.

Bathroom walls also warrant periodic touch ups or repaints every two to four years. If you have any family members that like to take hot showers, the room might experience high moisture and temperature changes a couple of times a day. Even though there are quality paints that are moisture resistant, you might begin noticing holes and cracks from normal usage, including from door dings. Keep in mind too that paint colors impact mood and as your young ones grow up, you might want a fresh coat of paint to brighten up the room.

Bedrooms

This goes two ways.  Adult bedroom walls, much like the living room, don’t see too much wear and tear. Plus, while you technically spend a lot of time in your bedroom, most of that is while sleeping in bed – and therefore not harming the walls. So really, you can just repaint whenever you want new colors.

Kids’ bedrooms, on the other hand, are probably the most abused rooms in the house. Expect to repaint them every couple of years, if you want to keep them looking nice.
