Considering A New Exterior House Painting? Here’s How to Pick Your Colors!

Nothing can change the look and feel of a home faster than a fresh coat of paint.  A professionally-applied exterior house painting can add plenty of curb appeal while refreshing its overall look.  It’s like a facelift for your home. How to Pick Your Colors for the exterior of your home.

The biggest issue is deciding what colors to use.  Sure, you could keep the same look – but why?  Chances are, styles have changed since the original paint job.  Picking a new color scheme will help your home remain timely, or even improve your chances of selling if you’re looking to move.

How To Pick The Perfect Colors For Your Exterior House Painting

  1. Start by looking at the colors you can’t change

There are colorful elements of your home you won’t be changing when you get your home painted.  The roof is the most obvious example, and brickwork can also have a substantial impact on your color choices.  This can also include elements such as the color of the foliage and greenery you have.  These existing colors should be your starting point, because you want to choose paint colors which are complementary. If your paint clashes with your roof, it won’t look good.

  1. Take cues from your neighbors

One thing that makes a block feel like a neighborhood is when all the buildings have some shared design elements – and colors are a great example of this.  Try not to go too far afield from what nearby buildings are using.  After all, for someone driving by, they will be part of the overall palette of your street.  You don’t want your new paint to clash with your neighbors, just like you don’t want it to clash with your roof.

  1. Hang paint samples all day for at least a few days

One of the trickiest aspects of picking house paint colors is that the ambient lighting is constantly changing.  It’s not enough to pick a color you like in the showroom.  How does that color look at dawn?  At noon?  In early evening?  What about when it’s raining?

Ideally, you should leave your paint samples in place for a while, so you can see what they look like in a wide variety of lighting conditions.
