7 Reasons Why Painting Over Wallpaper Is Better For Your Walls

Maybe the wallpaper in your room looks dull these days or you simply want to experiment with different colors in your room. Whatever the reason, if you are considering removing wallpaper in a room, here is an alternative that is easily doable: painting over wallpapers. Not only is it easy, fast and less costly, it is also better for your walls. Here are 7 reasons why painting over wallpaper is better for your walls.

1. Removing wallpaper can be messy, especially if it has been on the wall for a number of years.  The peeling and scraping involved can cause unexpected damage to your wall – especially dry walls.

2. If the texture of the wallpaper extending to your painted walls is a concern, this is a non issue as it can be avoided. It is possible to use primers or lining paper to hide the seams and designs of the wallpaper. So worrying about the texture is not a reason to dissuade you from painting on wall papers.

3. By leaving the wallpaper in place, you might be doing your walls a favor because they will stay in their existing form. The additional work you do during painting is not actually done on the wall itself but the existing wallpaper hung on the wall.

4. In case your wallpaper is largely intact and in good condition, there’s no reason to spend a lot effort, time and money in removing the wallpaper before painting your walls. Removing the wallpaper is an added cost you could avoid.

5. Peeling and scraping your wallpaper are extra procedures to prep your wall for a new coat of paint. The cost and effort increases because you have to go to extra lengths to make sure your walls are ready for painting where a wallpaper used to exist. In addition, this can wear off the wall over a period of time.

6. If you choose to remove the wallpaper but do not do so effectively, you will see the effects on the wall once you have painted on it. The paint may be uneven, rub off or even flake.

7. For wallpapers to stick on walls, glues – usually compounds of modified starch or methyl cellulose – are used. After settling in, if you try to take off the paper, residue of the glue may still remain. The extra burden of removing these can cause further blemishes on your wall.

There are many alternatives to freshen up your walls. If you have largely intact wallpaper on your walls, then it might be a good idea to just paint over it to make your life easier. If you are now convinced that painting over wallpapers is a better idea, make sure you consider these steps to take to ensure you get the best results when painting your walls. If you’re still not convinced then there is always the option to get professional assistance and easily remove your wallpaper before you get to your paint makeover.
