How to Paint Older Kitchen Cabinets?

If you are worried about the cave-like looks of your kitchen, it is perhaps the time you need for a brighter make over. Your kitchen looks gloomy because of the dark cabinets that suck all the light out of the room. However, a kitchen make over does not only mean replacing all your gloomy old cabinets with the new ones. In fact you don’t need to replace the old cabinets with the new ones as long as the frames and doors are structurally good, you can clean the old cabinets with brush and paint the same.

Painting your old cabinets will have a magical effect on your kitchen and will make your kitchen sunny.

Clean the Cabinets:

Before applying paint, you need to clean the old cabinets even it doesn’t look dirty. You can take a piece of cloth and clean off all dirt, grease, and grime. You can even mix a little amount of TSP with water and apply the mixture on both sides of the cabinets using a sponge and then wipe off with a clean cloth.

Repair the Surface:

It is important to repair any holes, cracks, or gouges your cabinet may have. You need to fill the cracks and holes with putty and sand the area. You can also apply tape to the back surface of the cabinet doors underneath those holes. Then you can fill the holes with the wood filler and wipe away the excess part with a damp cloth.

Sand the Surfaces Properly:

Once you are done with repairing the holes, you need to sand the surface to smooth out the area of the cabinets. If the purpose of your cabinet repainting project is just to upgrade the outer look of the cabinets, you don’t need to sand and paint the inside of the cabinets. In such cases, you can mask off the inner part of your kitchen cabinets with painter’s tape and clean and sand only the front surfaces as well as other visible edges of your cabinet.

Use Latex Based Paint:

Once you are done with sanding and cleaning the surface of the cabinets you need to paint, apply a good quality primer to all surfaces in order to ensure a well-bonded paint adhesion. By using primer-sealers you can also eliminate the need to sand and deglaze old finishes. You only need to use latex based paints on your cabinets. You can start from painting the inside edges and openings first and then move to the outer surfaces.

Painting old cabinets is not actually a big deal. However, hiring the Chappaqua Painters NY will always help you to get the things done easily and professionally.
