Can I Paint My Home Myself?

I am about to move into a 2 bedroom new construction condo. The walls of my new condo are all white and the entire place needs to be painted. This excites me a lot when I think of having a new home that I could paint myself. But the funniest part is that I have never painted a room by myself and the horror stories about “Do It Yourself” kind of care me. I am afraid of the cost of hiring a professional painter and have this idea that I could paint some of our rooms by myself if I get little help from the professionals.

However, house painting is not a job that I can do without taking the advice’s from a professional painter. Hence, I talked to the local house painters in Mount Kisco NY who have come up with the following suggestions.

Choosing the Paint:

What I have learned from the local house painters in Mount Kisco NY is that there are two basic types paint: water based latex and oil based alkyd. Latex paint cleans up easily with soap and water and dries quickly. It remains flexible longer so it’s less likely to crack. On the other hand, alkyd paint requires mineral spirits or paint thinner for cleanup and you cannot clean it just by using soap and water. There are also different types of sheen recommended for different areas of the house.

Surface Preparation:

I understand that in order the new paint to adhere to my wall, It must be clean and free of dust, dirt, grime, mildew and other chalky residue. Since I will be doing it myself, I would prefer hand scrubbing to prepare the surface. I should also be careful in filling the holes and any wall cracks. Any areas where repairs has been done will need to be primed first.

Selecting the Color:

The professional local house painters in Mount Kisco Painters NY have helped me to enlighten my ideas in terms of selecting the right color for my house. Since I am not sure where to begin with color, they have advised me to experiment in a small hall or area between rooms. As far as the color is concerned, I would love to select a favorite color drawn from the artwork, furniture, and accessories as a main color or accent.
