A Simple Guide to Painting Laminate Cabinets

Laminate cabinets are extremely common and are found in many houses. Laminated wood is long-lasting, sturdy, and doesn’t require much maintenance. Mostly, laminated wood is used for making cabinets that can be used in the kitchen or other rooms in the house. However, like any other kind of wood, laminated surfaces need to be repainted after a few years. If you feel that your cabinets are looking a bit worse for wear, it might be time to repaint the laminated surfaces. Unfortunately, most people don’t know much about painting laminated surfaces and often end up ruining the surface. Repainting the laminate cabinets is a great way to improve the aesthetic appeal of your kitchen without breaking the bank. Here is a brief guide that will help you properly repaint the cabinets.

Clean the Cabinets

Before you begin to paint, you need to wipe down the cabinets carefully. Use a clean cloth and a laminate cleaner to remove all the dirt from the surface. Laminate cleaners are readily available in the markets, so you can purchase one at an affordable price. Make sure that the cabinets are dry before you proceed to the next step.

Prime the Surface

After the laminate surface has been cleaned, you need to prime it. To do this, just use a small paint brush to paint around the areas that are located close to the edges. This will prevent the paint from spilling over on the walls. Priming the surface is important to avoid any mishaps. You can use a larger roller to prime the center of the surface.

Sanding

After the surface has been primed, dried, and cured, it’s time to lightly sand the surface. Use fine grit sandpaper to gently sand the surface and make it smooth. It’s important that you try to do this as gently as possible to avoid removing the primer that you just put on. Use a clean cloth to wipe off any dust from the sanded surface.

Topcoat

After sanding is complete, it’s time to finally start painting the laminate surface. Give the paint can a stir. Take half of it out in your working pot, and then pour some into the working tray. The same strategy you used with the primer will be applied here. Use a smaller paintbrush to first cover the edges of the laminate surface, and then use a larger roller to paint the surface in the middle.

While painting, it’s imperative that you use vertical strokes. The roller can cover an even surface carefully, thus making it easy for you to paint in a specific line. Applying a double coat can ruin the surface, so make sure you do it properly. Once you’ve finished painting, place a tray on the surface to prevent any drips. In case some of the paint spills over, you can use a conventional paint cleaner to remove it without harming the surface.
