Picking the Perfect Color for Your Nursery

After months or years of planning, the special day has finally arrived. You have a beautiful bouncing baby boy or girl, and nothing could be finer in the world. An entire life of wonder awaits them as you prepare to take them home from the hospital to their nice little–

Wait. Have you not painted the nursery yet?

Let’s be honest, there is a lot that goes on when it comes to planning and having a baby. A lot. Naturally, just about every field is going to claim that theirs is the one which requires your most immediate attention in planning ahead, but let’s be real – few things are more important than the place your baby is going to sleep and live for the first couple years of his or her life, right?

Budget First

First thing’s first – before you lay down any canvassing or dab a single stroke of paint, you’re going to want to crunch some numbers. The absolute worst thing you can do for any major financial undertaking, including home improvement projects such a creating a nursery, is getting into it without a solid idea of what it’s all going to cost you.

While your cost is naturally going to fluctuate given the size of your room and your overall socioeconomic status, plan on putting forward a couple of thousand dollars total towards everything from a crib and furniture to toys and shelves to the actual linen and paint itself. Paint shouldn’t be too expensive, but beware; the cheaper it is, the more likely it is to chip and flake, meaning repaints and even more money spent.

Make Long-Term Plans

Another major nursery planning and painting mistake many parents make is going all-in with bright blues or hot pink. While we’ll get into gender and child psychology of color selection in a moment, for now, it’s important to recognize that your child will be living in that room for a few years, so what’s nice at two can be a bit more embarrassing in a few years. What’s more, while gendering colors is a problem in itself, using such stereotypically-gendered schemes can be awkward should that girl for which you were planning (and painting) turns out to be a boy. Sure, there’s nothing wrong if Junior happens to like pink; just plan ahead a bit before painting is all we’re saying.

Go with Calming Main Colors…

Another reason not to go with gender-stereotypical pinks and blues for your nursery color? Color psychology. Simply put, painting soothing colors can have a soothing effect on your child. When deciding on your wall’s main color, think soft, muted, pastel-esque colors – in other words, probably not electric green!

…With Bolder Accents, Bedding, and Accessories

Pastels alone, while nice, can be a bit dull if that’s all that’s coloring your child’s room. As such, while the main color scheme should probably aim to soothe, you can still look to spice things up with brighter complementary colors which accent those pastels perfectly. The same goes for bedding, furniture, and other accessories as well.

All this and more can help you get started picking out the perfect color for your baby’s new nursery today!
